The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection collates the numbers of X-ray examinations every year. While the number of X-ray examinations decreased over the last decade (1996 – 2009), the frequency of significant and dose intensive computed tomography more than doubled in the same time span. In cases of cerebral emergencies in need of cranial CT’s, the highest local tissue dose will be used for examination. The eye lens in particular is prone to radiation cataracts. Therefore, the Commission on Radiological Protection suggests the application of protectors among other methods to reduce the potential risk.
